Our gang finds themselves once again in the mansion, in the basement.
They ventured through the other hidden door, the one by the beds, and
discovered a series of tunnels carved into the rock. A number of the
paths were dark and musty, but a seemingly defined pathway was lit with
torches mounted to the rock walls. Voices could be heard in the
distance, so the group had to move quietly. Using her small size and
stealthy nature to their advantage, Betty manages to get close enough to
count the number of bodies in a nearby cove; including the huge
hobgoblin guarding the entrance.
Managing to get far enough away to make a plan unheard, it is decided
that Leah will use an invisibility spell on Betty, her small stature
allowing her to move practically silently and hopefully get in a sneak
attack on the guard while the others come in behind her to take the rest
by surprise.
Unfortunately, their plan fails as Betty only manages to give the guard
an unintentional hug instead, spoiling the surprise. Grossly
outnumbered, the ladies find themselves battling for their lives within
the tight confines of the tunnel system. Thankfully they do have a new
ally, Enya’s wolf Ember, has returned from the Druid healers and is
ready to take a chunk out of some bad guys, literally. Ember’s fighting
prowess is just what they need to take down the large group of
smugglers, including their supposed leader who’s as well versed in magic
as they suspected and feared.
The smugglers are defeated, leaving behind evidence of their shady
business practices along with a handy rowboat. The ladies know that this
contraband needs to be taken into town, but there’s still the matter of
the top floor of the mansion that has yet to be investigated.
Ambush in the woods! Our intrepid group leaves Saltmarsh to venture back
to the alchemist’s mansion to complete their task. However they
encounter a group of archers who attack them from the cover of the trees
and bushes on either side of the path. A lengthy and almost costly
fight ensues, with several member of the quartet becoming severely
injured. It is a struggle as the girls are seemingly outmatched at every
turn. Their arrows, swords and spells missing their opponents again and
again, but eventually our adventurers emerge victorious. They’re
battered and bruised, some of them unconscious. But all is not lost due
an exciting realization, they’ve leveled up! That means new skills, new
tools, and even a new companion.

We're back with our "hat" full of celebrity names and are ready to pull out a few of them to discuss on this week's show. Who will we get? Male? Female? Singer? Actor? Both? Only one way to find out! Plus the news and some housekeeping.
Success! Maybe? After taking on a small gang of skeleton zombies, a secret door to the alchemist’s lab appeared! Unfortunately the fate of the alchemist was confirmed when they were attacked by his remains, complete with acid that caused significant damage to Enya’s armor. With teamwork though the alchemist, or what remained of him, was defeated and he disappeared into a pile of dust
.
Upon entering the lab, it appeared that they had literally struck gold. Several gold items were mixed in with the lab equipment, along with some books including what appeared to be the spell book that Keledek had asked for. Packing up their loot in their handy new bag-of-holding, the group quickly left the mansion and went back to town. After a meal and a drink, their first stop, Keledek’s tower.
The wizard was surprised to see the quartet return so soon, but was nevertheless pleased to hear they had acquired what he was looking for. After inspecting their loot, their hearts fell when Keledek burst into laughter. In his opinion, the so-called alchemist was nothing but a big phony! Thankfully all was not lost as Keledek still offered to pay them for their finds, even if the gold wasn’t as valuable as originally thought. Even better was the higher sum the wizard paid out after some persuasion on Finnea’s part.
After departing the wizard’s tower, the group took advantage of it still being early in the day to sell off the rest of their loot and getting Enya some new armor as hers’ was a lost cause due to the alchemist’s acid attacks. Their bag-of-holding lighter and their coin purses heavier, the adventure had already paid off quite handsomely. However they knew that they hadn’t completely accomplished their hired task and that meant going back to the mansion.

When we last saw our group of adventurers, they had entered
the alchemist’s mansion. After searching most of the rooms on the ground floor
and an uncomfortable encounter with a swarm of spiders, the foursome found
themselves in the basement via a trap door, hidden from view in the dark and
dust. Unfortunately, they quickly found out they were not alone in the house. A
group of bandits, likely smugglers, had taken up residence and were quick to
take up a fight. Quite the scuffle ensued, but our adventurers eventually
emerged the winners, albeit a bit worse for wear.
After examining their fallen foes for clues to their
identities, and any possible loot, further examination of the basement was
required. A smaller yet more opulent room was discovered, likely belonging to
the ringleader of this group of thugs, full of more clues and loot for the
picking. It appeared that the leader, while appearing to be a somewhat skilled
mariner, also dabbled in magic.
The more they explored the basement, the more secrets it
seemed to reveal, this time a hidden door in the wall opposite the beds
presumably used by the gang. The door lead to the wine cellar, which included a
set of stairs that would lead to the landing the group originally found themselves
in upon first entering the house.
They didn’t have time to contemplate the seemingly strange
layout of the house, as the cellar, while lacking in bottles of wine, did
contain a body lying on the stone floor. Unsure if the person was dead or just
unconscious, the group received their answer when a large mass of maggots emerged
from the body and headed for our heroes. Another fight, thankfully once again
emerging victorious but no closer to finding the alchemist’s lab or spell book,
the team finds themselves with a decision.
Several miles away from the seaside town of Saltmarsh sits an abandoned
mansion, fallen into disrepair after the owner's presumed death. Most of
the town's residents presume it haunted, but there are a few who are
curious of the treasures the alchemist who lived there might have left
behind. The newest arrivals to Saltmarsh, a group of four castaways from
a recent lost ship, are hired to check the house for any spooks or
riches. Will they find their fortune or their demise?
Join the Five(ish) Fangirls in a new series, where we dive into the
world of playing Dungeons and Dragons. Our DM (Jared) and Chrissy are
seasoned D&D players, however the rest of us are brand new, so it'll
be even more adventurous as we learn along the way.
*Note: Yes this is our second session, we did record the first one but
unfortunately the audio did not turn out. We're still playing with
finding the best setup that works for all of us so there will be some
growing pains at least in the short term. We hope you stick with us and
enjoy the adventure!
